Outgrowing Old Passions

Are there any activities or hobbies you’ve outgrown or lost interest in over time?

It’s funny how the things we once loved can slowly fade into the background of our lives. At one point, they might have been our escape, our joy, or even a huge part of our identity. But as we grow, so do our interests, and sometimes that means leaving behind things that once felt essential.

For me, two of those things were tennis and drawing.

I used to love playing tennis. The feeling of the racket in my hand, the sound of the ball making contact—it was exhilarating. There was something about the fast pace, the challenge of improving my technique, and the satisfaction of a well-placed shot that kept me coming back. But over time, life got busier, and I found myself playing less and less. At some point, I realized I hadn’t picked up a racket in years.

It wasn’t a conscious decision to quit, but rather a slow drift away. Other priorities took over, and while I still appreciate the sport, it no longer holds the same place in my life. And that’s okay.

Then there’s drawing—something that once felt like a part of me. I loved sketching, playing with shading, and getting lost in creativity. It was a way to express myself, to put thoughts onto paper when words weren’t enough.

But somewhere along the way, I just stopped. Maybe it was self-doubt, a lack of time, or just shifting interests, but the passion I once had for it just isn’t there anymore. I sometimes wonder if I’ll ever pick it up again, and maybe I will, but for now, it’s something I’ve let go of.

It’s easy to feel guilty for outgrowing things we once loved, but the truth is, we evolve. Our interests shift, and that’s a natural part of life. Letting go of an old hobby doesn’t erase the joy it once brought it just means we’re making space for new things that fit who we are now.

Maybe one day, I’ll find myself back on a tennis court or picking up a pencil again. Or maybe not. Either way, I’m okay with it.

What about you? Are there any hobbies or activities you’ve outgrown over time? Let’s talk about it.
